When Katherine signed the document during the AQUA ASSEMBLY, she had assumed dahlia goode would only request from her to show up for important events. Aliens trying to take over the region, terrorist attacks, strange press conferences... The usual. But touring across the region to alleviate people's concerns? Posing to the paparazzi so their focus shifts from the League's loss of Sootopolis?

In a way, that did bring Katherine the fame she desired when she first set her eyes upon joining the League undercover… But it felt manufactured in a way she wasn’t so thrilled about.

Naturally, another day of presswork and publicity stunts came to an end. Katherine found herself walking back to her hotel, passing by an almost-dead, flickering street lamp.

The voice is familiar, but not enough for Katherine to immediately recognize it. As she turns, she searches for a face to register the voice to - but she finds none. The Illusion proves effective in the eyes of the unsuspecting Avatar.

Not in the most preferable way, though. She wanted to know who dared to approach her like this. “It’d be a bit more well-mannered if you showed your face, though. That’s how most people talk, you know?”

“Ha, ha, ha. She was lucky I didn’t do worse.”

I should have, Katherine thinks for a moment. One casualty was far from enough considering what the League and her, in particular, lost that day. “I hope her cat’s doing well.”

Killian chooses to remain hidden, as though it granted him a layer of protection against the Malevolent, alas it didn’t.

Her hand curls into a tight fist as gravity begins to intensify in an area around her, likely large enough to affect Killian or his Zoroark - if not both. She doesn’t attempt to harm either of them, however, and only uses it as a warning.

“No. You do not have my word.”

Honesty. He’d appreciate that, wouldn’t he?

“Show yourself,” she demands.

The illusion dissipates soon after the demand is made, granting Katherine her first look at the person she’s been speaking to until now. Now, with his face revealed, she does manage to recognize why that voice sounded so familiar.

“I do,” plain and dry. She doesn’t seem very excited about meeting yet another Rocket member who dared to track her down. What was it about Rocket and being unable to let go of the past? Kat had denounced the organization, after all. She went rogue. She betrayed every last one of them - friends and former co-workers alike.

“Why are you here, Killian?” having already relinquished her control over gravity, the threat she’s made was over. She didn’t care to hurt him— not yet. “You know how I feel about you all. So what brings you here? Some kind of a death wish?”

“Ah... I am afraid you’re already under the wrong impression.”

To assumed that she disliked some Rockets was far, but the vast majority she had to work alongside was… Not that bad, really. Especially considering some of her peers from the League, who were just as bad, if not worse. [break][break]“Pfft. I liked plenty of them. Hell, I still like some Rockets. I severed my ties with the organization and Walsh in particular, not my friends.”

Katherine pursues her lips as she lets Killian continue. Did he assume she left because she got tired of some people?

”Really? In that case, Killian, what are the right questions?”

“Why shouldn’t it be?”

Regardless of whatever picture Cillian Quinn would have painted, the people Katherine still cared for knew her well enough to anticipate this. Who would have trusted The Malevolent to remain loyal and compliant?

”Because there are things more important than world domination. Our world… Our universe. It does not revolve around whether if the League or Rocket will win,” but what was more important than that for Katherine Fairburne, Killian might wonder? “I parted ways with Rocket because there was nothing worthwhile left for me there.”

It wasn’t a disagreement about her paycheck, but rather, everything else the elite four wanted to claim for herself.

”You guys could conquer ten more cities and it wouldn’t change a thing for me, Killian. I don’t care what the result in this war will be,” she smiles, finally. ”Because I always win.”

“It’s a lot easier than you think, Killian. The league keeps me busy. There are no personal failures for me to worry about, but there are plenty of others I have to deal with. Everyone else’s.”

Katherine was, is, and most likely will forever be vanity personified. pride and sin flowed in her veins just as well as blood did. with the blessing of a god bestowed upon her, she was truly embraced by the divine.

“What I hope to achieve, what I find worthwhile - what I want - goes hand in hand with what Giratina needs.” Vague. By the sound of things, she’ll likely keep it that way unless Killian truly gives her a reason to change course. “It just so happens that I find it easier to accomplish with the League by my side.”

Her assessment comes next, “You would do the same if you were in my shoes, Killian. I am sure of it. You’re a smart man.” A thin-lipped smirk graces her features, a playful glimmer shining in her stare.

“You know, as much as I am enjoying this interview, I do want to know more about why are you here.” He said it already, didn’t he? He came here to talk. But so far, their conversation felt rather one-sided. “I truly am flattered, but there must be… something more.”

Was he looking for inspiration?

… Some sort of a deal?

“You don't strike me as the shy type. Really, there's no need to beat around the bush. If there's something in it for me, I'd be happy to help and do more than just answer a couple of questions,” she confesses.
